I think my blog is now officially called Paul Thurrott Focus.....
A couple months ago, Apple announced a switch from PowerPC CPUs to Intel CPUs. They subsequently releases some special developer-only machines running an Intel CPU with MacOS X installed. No "MacIntel" machines have yet been released to the public.

Within the last few days, it has become known that these developer machines utilize a digital rights management chip (also made by Intel) called TPM, or Trusted Platform Module. Apparently this chip is the reason why efforts to crack the x86 version of MacOS X and make it run on generic PC hardware has been as yet unsuccessful. For some reason, this has created a lot of hubbub. Daring Fireball does a good job of addressing these issues here: http://daringfireball.net/2005/08/trusted

What they don't quite come out and say is this: Apple is first and foremost a hardware company. The vast majority of their revenue comes from hardware sales (which is not just iPods). The upcoming switch to Intel CPUs creates the obvious possibility of someone taking OS X and trying to install it on a generic PC, which - if it became a trend - would be disastrous to Apple's bottom line. Clearly then, they want to do something to prevent that, on have used TPM on the developer machines to accomplish that. Such a move is hardly unexpected. I really don't see why it's surprising or why people have a problem with it. After all, all Apple is doing is maintaining the status quo. That is, that Mac OS only runs of Mac hardware. While using PowerPC CPUs, the CPU acted as a de facto lock-in, since a version of MacOS X compiled for PPC can't run on x86 hardware. The switch requires a different kind of lock. Big flipping deal.

Now Paul Thurrott has stepped in with this claim:

We all want to believe that Apple's move to a PC-like platform will mean that OS X will eventually be portable to true PCs. Obviously, this is not something Apple wants. Clearly, access to TPM was one of the reasons Apple chose Intel. [Emphasis added]

First of all, who is "we all?" The answer is PC geeks like Paul, who have forever whined about Macs beings too expensive/slow/whatever. They want to have their cake and eat it, too: the elegant, stable, secure OS X on cheap, generic PC hardware. Sorry, not going to happen in this lifetime, if ever, since as Paul rightly points out, Apple doesn't want this.

So clearly, Apple's switch to Intel was partly motivated by a desire to use TPM?

I'm sorry, but that just doesn't make a lick of sense. There isn't a single shred of logic behind that statement at all. As Daring Fireball pointed out, it would be suicidal for Apple to implement TPM in any that really restricts the user in their computing experience. It's as I said: they need to prevent OS X from running on generic hardware to protect their bottom line.

That means that the use of TPM is a necessary consequence of the switch to Intel, not a reason driving the switch. How could it be? If that were true, then that means Apple wanted to switch to Intel because Intel has a solution to the problem that switching would create. And that's just dumb. If that was their motivation, then all it does is bring them a full 360 degrees to where they've been all along: with an OS tied to their own hardware. That's hardly a motivation to switch CPU platforms.

Think of it this way. Apple switching to Intel to get access to TPM would be likely furniture manufacturers who use that new stain-proof microfiber cloth to "regular" cloth because there's a great product called ScotchGuard that prevents staining.

Let's make a problem for ourselves so we can fix it. Does that make sense to do? Of course not. It's a zero-sum equation. One that in this case would cost Apple a boatload of R&D dollars, not to mention pissing off their user base and obsoleting at a stroke every existing piece of Mac hardware and software. No, TPM can't (and isn't) a reason for Apple's switch to Intel. They did that for completely different reasons (many of which I don't' agree with, but that's another story).

Clearly, access to TPM was one of the reasons Apple chose Intel? No, clearly not.

    www.federationmodels.com SUCKS!
I am in the midst of 4 different Star Trek plastic models. One of them is a 1/72 scale DS9 runabout that I am rebuilding (have had it for years). I need a new decal sheet for it.

Now this kit has been out of production for years, so I can't simply write to AMT/Ertl and request a new sheet. My only option is to turn to the rather limited aftermarket support for these kits. One such source is Federation Models (www.federationmodels.com). They have decals, kits, resin detail sets, and all sorts of goodies.

Their stuff is not cheap, but for the most part is priced reasonably. The problem is, they HOSE you on shipping & handling. Last night, I tried to order a new Runabout decal sheet from them, and they wanted $6.60 shipping.

I'm sorry, but that's absurd. So I wrote them an email and explained to them in no uncertain terms that for a single decal sheet that was exorbitant, and that I think they need to recheck their shipping calculator.

Their response: screw you. They said it's not their fault, that their shipping costs are calculated by USPS so it's not unreasonable, and that if I felt that way, they didn't want me as a customer. Well, fine. I don't want to buy products from rip off artists, so that's fair enough.

Frankly, I don't care what the shipping calculator says. $6.60 is too high for a piece of paper, and a guarantee you that's not what they actually pay for shipping. They claimed the actual cost is in the $4.80 area. It's really probably $2 or less. I know, since I've shipped such items myself.

So for anyone who actually reads this: Don't buy from Federation Models.

    Thurr[idi]ott
Again. I'm starting sound like a borken record here, but I can't help it this time.

Yes, it's Paul Thurrott. The WinTel world's resident motormouth and complete moron.

Today, Inside Apple (www.insideapple.com) published an editorial (ie an OPINION piece) entitled "First Look: Is the iMac G5 Reliable?"

The author is Inside Apple's editor-in0chief, who also works as an Apple Authorised Service Provider.

In the piece, he expresses concerns over some possible shortcomings in the iMac G5 that may be resulting in an inordinate number of them experiencing premature hardware failures. It is an interesting read, and the author was careful to note (several times) that his view is likely biased since as a service provider, he only sees machines that break, and that therefore he is confident that there are many more iMac G5s that are still chugging along without problems. Therefore, his words should be taken with a grain of salt, interestingly though they are.

I quote from the editorial (http://www.insideapple.com/articles/iMacG5_reliability.php):

Granted, I'm fairly confident that there plenty of Mac users with iMac G5's that are purring along just fantastically, and because of where I work, I only get to witness the ugly side of things in the confined world of service work on Apple computers.

He goes on to say that despite that, he still has concerns. Ok fine.

    Until Thurrott stepped in.

I saw on Internet Nexus a long, heavily edited quote from that editorial:

Surprisingly, even numerous second-generation iMac G5's have broken down short of their advertised life expectancy. Coming from my line of work within an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP), my opinion of the iMac G5's may seem a tad biased, as the only iMac G5's I do see here are the ones that don't work properly in one form or another. However, of all the Macs Apple manufactures and sells, it seems that the iMac G5 comes in for service the most of them all, second to the iBook line of consumer products - each with major hardware failures.

I'm ... inclined to believe that the design of the iMac G5 is slightly flawed, and that that particular flaw wasn't entirely resolved in the second-generation flow of the iMacs.

The iMac G5 typically suffers from one of three (or multiple) hardware defects - 1) blown capacitors on the logic board, causing distorted video and / or freezing; 2) a hard drive that has gone south pre-maturely, or; 3) a power supply gone bad after emitting a burnt-smell sensation.

Hard drives can get fairly warm, and it's expected. But the hard drives in some iMac G5's get a little more than just simply warm - some get to the point of boiling themselves out of service.

Something deep down ... must be seriously flawed if some of the iMac G5's are at risk of burning up and possibly burning down your living room in the process ... the iMac G5 could of been designed to be a little more reliable from the beginning.

This was followed up with a highly unoriginal "Where's the computer?" joke that Paul undoubtedly thinks is quite funny.

Deliberately edited out of that quote is every bit of disclaimer that the author built into it. Moreover, Paul failed to mention that it's not a factual report, but an editorial, with the goal being to make it sound factual and make the while situation sound worse than it is.

I guess this is a correction for the recent praise he's\d been singing towards Apple and the mud he'd been slinging towards Redmond.

Either that or his payoff finally showed up.

I have sen 66 of these movies
    1. Take this list and post it into your own LJ, and mark the movies you've seen (in bold).
    2. Add five more movies to the end of the list.
    3. Count how many you have seen. If you've seen more than 70 movies, you are a Movie Whore. Post the score of how many movies you've seen in the subject line.
    4. Use a LJ-cut since you've got at least one LJ-friend who doesn't really want to see an ungodly number of movies snaking its way down the computer monitor (now at 365).
    5. (optional) Question your friend's taste in movies (because you can)

I've got to ride....ride like the wind....to be free again.
Notice my current music. "Ride Like the Wind" by Christopher Cross. I cashed in a free song from iTunes (LOVE that Pepsi promotion; take that Coke ;)) to get it last night. It's a rather old song (1980) but I love it. Why? Because I performed this song when I was in my middle school's concert band. In 8 years of band (5th-12th grade; I played the clarinet), I never had as much fun as when we played a special concert band arrangment of "Ride Like the Wind." The beat is awesome, just plain awesomem and even though the lyrics are simple, there's still a lot going on in the song (nobody sang during our performance; it was just instrumental). Seriously, that was the most fun I had. It was also the closest we ever came to doing actual, contemporary pop music. Plus the conductor was a great guy. Band in high school was a grind, less because the music was harder but because the music director was a complete schmuck and a total a-hole. In retrospect, I'm surprised he was able to keep people in the program. He berated, belittled, embarrassed, lied to, and overworked EVERYONE, and reneged on the awards program, even though it was in writing. He even succeeded in making seniors cry on more than one occassion. That's bad.

But this song is great...... )

Hide the Truth, here comes Paul Thurrott (part 3)
Once again, it's time to deconstruct something stupid that Paul Thurrott said.

Earlier today, windowsitpro.com posted of Paul's "WinInfo Short Takes." First of all, it needs to be said that these "Short Takes" are mostly just another vehicle for Paul's opinions (like his Internet Nexus weblog). Unfortunately, just as with his blog, the opinions are stated as facts. And these "facts" are often baseless, if not completely wrong.

Today, he had this to say:

    Why Is iTunes So Insecure?
I subscribe to a line of thinking that goes like this: Windows is attacked so often because it controls such a large portion of the market. Period. So we might be able to apply this thinking to another popular software market--online music services, in which the Apple Computer iTunes Music Store dominates. Predictably, iTunes, like Windows, is attacked far more often than its Windows-based competitors. Or is it? The truth is that iTunes is compromised far more often than Windows-based services, but how often hackers attack Microsoft's Digital Rights Management (DRM) scheme is unclear. Regardless, iTunes, like pre-XP SP2 versions of Windows, has fallen time and again under the withering attack of hackers who are intent on gaining access to the service. Doing so is amazingly easy. Last week, infamous encryption hacker DVD Jon broke through Apple's weak security and offered Windows and Linux users a way to purchase iTunes tracks without DRM. Apple fixed the hole, of course. But a day later--just 1 day--DVD Jon was back with a new version of his hack that foiled Apple's efforts. My question is simple. If Microsoft can secure a system as complex as Windows, why can't Apple secure one service?

The little gem at the end about "If Microsoft can secure a system as complex as Windows" comes from earlier in the Takes, where he states that evidence has emerged that Service Pack 2 has dramatically reduced the amount of "bots" (adware/spyware) that get installed on a Windows machine, even though the number of "attacks" by bots has doubled. More on this later.

Let's look at this one line by line.

I subscribe to a line of thinking that goes like this: Windows is attacked so often because it controls such a large portion of the market. Period.

FUD. Plain and simple. And like most FUD, it's 100% wrong. This is simple restatement of the old "security through obscurity" myth which states that Mac OS X is "secure" merely because it provides too insignificant a target for hackers. For a supposed "tech reporter" to take this idea to heart is just plain lazy, not to mention unprofessional, irresponsible and (in my opinon) unethical (since he's spreading misinformation).

So we might be able to apply this thinking to another popular software market--online music services, in which the Apple Computer iTunes Music Store dominates. Predictably, iTunes, like Windows, is attacked far more often than its Windows-based competitors. Or is it?

Exactly. "Or is it?" No, it isn't. There is precisely ZERO evidence to suggest that iTunes is attacked far more often than anything. To date, I'm aware of only two "attacks" on iTunes, both of which are indirect, and not even attacks. First, there was "Harmony," a reverse-engineered version of Apple's DRM that Real released to allow downloads from Real's store to work on iPods. This was disabled by Apple in a later iPod software update. This isn't exactly an attack. It was more like a copyright violation, and didn't affect iTunes at all.

Then there's the current issue that Paul mentions later on: "PyMusique," which is a program that is able to access the iTunes Music Store and download songs. ASs it turned out, the DRM is added to the downloads on the client side, and since PyMusique doesn't do that, the downloads are DRM free. Again, this wasn't an attack. In fact, bypassing the DRM wasn't even the goal of the PyMusique project; the goal was simply to provide an interface for iTMS that worked on Linux. Apple quickly closed the hole that allowed this to happen, but as Paul pointed out, only a day later, PyMusique was updated and once again worked.

Now it's not as if this happened months ago; everything involving PyMusique took place in the last two weeks. It's hardly fair to criticize Apple so early in the game, especially when you consider that Microsoft is downright notorious for allowing major security flaws to languish for months between the time they are reported and the time a patch is released. Give me a break Paul.

The truth is that iTunes is compromised far more often than Windows-based services, but how often hackers attack Microsoft's Digital Rights Management (DRM) scheme is unclear.

As I have just shown, this is flat wrong. Shamefully wrong. Paul didn't do his homework.

Regardless, iTunes, like pre-XP SP2 versions of Windows, has fallen time and again under the withering attack of hackers who are intent on gaining access to the service.

Again, wrong. iTunes has NEVER "fallen." It just hasn't. And two issues hardly constitutes a "withering attack."

First of all, Paul missed what I said earlier about PyMusique's purpose. It was NOT to bypass the DRM. And in any case, you still have to pay for the songs you download through PyMusique. And give Apple more than 3 days (which is how longs it's been since PyMusique was updated) before lambasting them for this.

My question is simple. If Microsoft can secure a system as complex as Windows, why can't Apple secure one service?
Uh....because it's ONLY BEEN 3 DAYS!!!!!!! If securing stuff was that easy and quick, Microsoft would have done it already. And by the way, even with SP2, Windows is anything but secure. Hackers found holes in SP2 almost immediately after it was released, and in any case, Windows is just insecure by design.

Basically, Paul is taking ONE issue that has just barely happened and using it to bash Apple. Ridiculous.

    Paul, shame on you.

    Oh I believe in yesterday
Well, since I can't seem to get back on the horse with this model plane, I guess I'll talk about the various mishaps from yesterday.......

First of all, my roommate had gone off to Maryland with a couple of our suitemates from last year for Spring Break. At 7:30 in the morning, his alarm clock went off, because he hadn't turned it off. Then it went off AGAIN 7 minutes later, thus robbing me of that precious last half hour of sleep. It also pissed off a friend who was visiting for the weekend.

So I hauled myself out of bed, dressed, and went to the campus for an airport run (which was the only reason I was still there; as this is Spring Break week, I'd have come home on Friday). The trip was uneventful, but annoying as it was depriving me of time at home.

Immediately upon getting back to the apartment, I decided to move Jerome's (roommate's car). He hadn't taken it with him (he rode with John), and had left me the key so I could move it after it stopped snowing. Well, it had been plowed in somewhat by the contractor, and for some reason the guy who does the rest of the plowing, who works for the apartment complex never showed up to clear out the rest of the parking.

So, I figured I'd just gun it and blast out of the spot. It had worked with my car, so I figured why not?

And I got COMPLETELY stuck. Oops. So now my roommate's car is stuck halfway out of the space, just begging to get creamed by one of the many idiots who drive too fast through the lot. Moreover, I'm stuck in the car, since the snow was just high enough to block the driver's door. Wonderful. Had to climb over the center console and go out the passenger door, drag my friend outside, and tried futilely for nearly 15 minutes to get the car free. One of the drive wheels was actually completely off the ground. Ouch.

Eventually, someone else noticed our struggle and came out with a snow shovel and started clearing snow from under the car, and FINALLY I got the car out of there. I gunned it over to an area that was actually clear of snow and parked it there. I also burned his clutch a little, since I was impatient and applied too much power going up the hill. Oops.

Then I found out that Jerome had either eaten or thrown away the rest of my honey roasted turkey breast. BASTARD! It's my favorite, and was brand new!

He and I are going to have words when we both get back. (I already took the liberty of giving the helpful neighbor a beer on Jerome's tab).

So after that fiasco, I started packing my stuff up to come home. Took way longer than I wanted, since I also had to sweep and mop. I'd been hoping to get home in time to stop by the hobby shop and see if I had any hours this week, but that didn't happen. It was nearly three by the time my friend and I left (and the shop closes at 4, and it takes 2.5 hours to get home).

Traffic in Connecticut wasn't bad; my friend and I (he's from the same town) made good time all the way into Massachusetts. We stopped off at a Roy Rogers in Sturbridge for a very late lunch, where two interesting side stories occured......

    Off topic stuff )

After lunch, we hopped onto the Massachusetts Turnpike (which was flowing VERY nicely. I've never seen people drive so fast on that road), and got off onto I-290, which was supposed to be a shortcut. It in fact is a short cut, since it it cuts the corner between the Pike and I-495, but can be trafficky, since it goes right through downtown Worcester.

    It was no shortcut yesterday......

About a mile and a half before before the end of I-290 (it starts at the Pike and ends at I-495, so it really isn't an interstate) traffic came to a screeching halt. To my horror, I could see billowing clouds of white smoke/steam ahead of me. THERE WAS A CAR FIRE RIGHT ON THE I-495 RAMP!!!!!!!!!!!! Even worse, it had only happened a few minutes before, and was still being put out. The ramp was shut down, forcing us to just sit there and wait. Took about 30-40 minutes before we got past it; nearly as much time as we would have saved by taking this route had the fire not happened. My friend and I violated a few FCC rules over my radios in "discussing" the incident, which was made much worse by the fact that I REALLY needed to use a bathroom.....

Then, when I finally got home, I had another rude surprise. The drain hose on our washing machine had blown apart. Without it, we can do no laundry. NOT good. I had only done enough laundry at the apartment to last me until I got home, with one extra day's worth of stuff. I have always done this, since I can do laundry for free at home. It would have been nice if someone had called me to warn me about this, so I could do same more laundry before leaving, but no. I am NEVER told about these things......

By the way, on Saturday, I received a genuine DeLorean grille emblem that I had bought online off a wrecked car. So I now have an actual piece of a DeLorean, which is better than no DeLorean at all ;)

Of course, my smartass father had this to say about it: "You know, that may well be as close as you ever come......"

Thanks Dad. I really needed that after the day I had.......

    Time machine please!
    God, see this picture?

    Me and the time machine

I need that time vehicle right now so I can GET MY EVENING BACK! Going onto campus to parties is such a WASTE OF TIME. I don't know anyone, and somehow it always conspires that I can't drink (except one notable time). SO I'm sober, standing around doing nothing for hours on end. DAMNIT! Why do I let my roommate talk me into this stuff?

Foxywriter has it easy; at least she has Possibilities (her term). I can't even talk to girls in person, let alone get anywhere with them. I am getting seriously pissed with this ongoing situation.

Well off I go to correct this problem with the past.....

    Phys Ed SUCKS
Got back from "Beginning Ice Skating Lessons" a little while ago. It's a simple, once a week, one credit phys ed class that - combined with the two lab credits I have - let me drop a problematic elective. It's fun, but MAN......

Today was week 4 of the class, and as has happened consistently, equipment problems abound. I don't own my own skates, so I have to use the rental skates they have at the ice pavilion, and they are horrible. First of all, they have toe picks (deep serrations on the toe of the blade) which really serve little purpose (toe picks are mainly for figure skates, although I have seen figure skates that lack them) except to catch on the ruts in the ice and make you fall down.

Second, they're dull. Today, the left skate I picked had NO inside edge at all. And the outside edge was pretty dull. That allowed my left foot to drift and wander all over the place, as if I didn't even have a skate on. So I get a different skate, and it was sharp enough, but the boot was loose. Ugh.

I think I will head down to Modell's later on today and see if they have any hockey skates that fit me. Hockey skates have no toe picks and a a wider boot that figure skates (the rental skates are sort of a cross between hockey skates and figure skates, which I guess are called recreational skates). Thing is, my shoe size is 10.5 4E, so finding decent fitting skates won't be easy.

Oh, and the Northford Ice Pavilion ice is lousy. Grooves, ruts, gouges and holes everywhere. This is because they are a public arena and have open skate sessions all the time, but they really ought to redo the ice more often. I don't mean simply zamboni it, but melt it down and reform it to get rid of the deformations. Having a nice clean, fresh surface would really help.

Now after all that, would you be surprised to hear that I actually enjoy this?

The new iPods. Or, Paul Thurrott is a sad, sad, joke.
    http://www.internet-nexus.com/2005_02_20_archive.htm#110916986866930194

In the above commentary, Paul Thurrott bashes the various rumor sites that track hot news coming out of Apple Computer. For some reason, it offends him that these RUMOR sites post things that turn out to be wrong. In fact, he claims they were utterly and completely wrong about the new iPods that came out today.

Not so fast, Paul! First of all, these are RUMOR sites, not news sites. More than a grain of salt is required when reading them. Second, they were far from "[u]tterly and completely wrong" (Paul's words). They were right that new iPods were coming out, and were right about when. They were right that the new mini would be six GB (correcting earlier rumors that it would be 8GB). ThinkSecret was correct about the iPod mini price points (didn't you say they were wrong about that, Paul?), and were right about the iPod Photo price points.

Please, Paul, look before you leap.

And by the way, what's up with this comment about disappointing "the six people that bought first generation iPod photos?" Are you trying to say that the iPod Photo sucks? That it doesn't sell well? Seems to me that it must sell well enough, otherwise Apple wouldn't have updated them. Of course, you hard;y ever get the market share numbers right. You were still trotting out the (questionable) 1.7% market share figure even AFTER the 4th quarter numbers showed an increase. Hell, that you even continue to trot out those numbers shows the depth of your ignorance.

But you know what I think? I think Mr. Thurrott is really grasping at straws. I think he can't find anything legit to complain about with regards to the new iPods (which of course doesn't stop his alter ago from trolling at The Mac Observer), so he's instead he's targeting the rumor sites for doing their jobs. He's acting all upset and offended that sites with a HUGE implicit disclaimer (RUMOR RUMOR may not be correct) might not be correct. Were you surprised, Paul? I'm not. They get the details wrong frequently, but the main substance of what they report is often true, and they've been more right than wrong on many, many occasions.

Hide the truth; here comes Paul Thurrott.

    FUD ALERT!
I enjoy Paul Thurrott's weblog (www.internet-nexus.com). Thurrott is a technology analyst for (among others) Connected Home Magazine (http://www.connectedhomemag.com/). His weblog consists mostly of snippets from various articles around the web concerning various computer topics (many about Apple Computer), but he often posts his own commentary as well. I disagree with most of it, but does make some valid points now and again. Quite a bit of his stuff is just FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt; material designed to make people second guess the topic at hand), however. Like what he posted earlier today. He quoted an Associated Press article about Naptser's new "Napster to Go" subscription music service titled "Portable Napster Won't Break Bank," and offered an extended commentary on it, making a few points about the "silly" debate over the merits of subscription (Napster) versus pay -per-download (Apple's iTunes Music Store). I agree with some of his points, but the others are just mind-boggling.

    1. The two business models can co-exist. The people who like to pay for music can keep doing so. It's your money.

Yes, I agree the two models can co-exist. There really aren't many people saying they can't. Even the pro-Apple press agrees that they can (for the most part), but of course, they'll favor iTMS. Except that in much of his commentary over the past several months, Pual has been implicitly saying that the subscription models are far better and will force out the pay-per services. So despite saying "the two business models can co-exist", I don't think he really believes that. I don't also like what Paul is implying here. The way I read the above comment, he's strongly implying that users of iTMS are choosing wasting their money. Just because you choose one service over another doesn't mean you're wasting your money on it.

    2. You don't "own" the music you "buy" at iTunes. One thing pay-per fans forget is that they're bound by the terms Apple sets, which let Apple change the rules at any time. They've already made one major change to their rules so far. Also, if you accidentally delete a song you "bought," you're dead. At Napster, you can re-download songs you've bought or subscribed to. Nice.

Strictly speaking, no, you don't "own" the music you buy from iTMS, since it's restricted by the Digital Rights Management (DRM) scheme attached to it. But for all intents and purposes, you do. You pay for it ONCE, and keep it forever. The DRM does restrict you to how many computers you can listen to it on, and how many times you can burn a given playlist to a CD (just the playlist; you can burn the song to an unlimited number of CDs), but that's not all that big a deal in my opinion. Also, he's wrong to say that Apple already made a "major" change. The increased the number of computers that could play their iTMS downloads from 3 to 5, and decreased the number of playlist burns allowed from 7 to 5 (it might be 10 to 7, I forget which, but no matter). And if you delete a song my accident (which is really unlikely, in my opinion), you aren't necessarily "dead." You CAN make backup copies of the files and restore the song from the backup. And if you had previously burned the song to a CD or loaded it onto an iPod, you can get it back from there as well. That would be more or less equivalent in terms of inconvenience to re-downloading the song from Napster. In fact, re-importing the song off the CD (actually, simply burning the CD in the fist place) strips the DRM off the song. Now you really DO own it.

    3. Subscription plans are proven money makers. We subscribe to all kinds of services, including cable TV, telephone and cell phone services, online video game services, ISPs, satellite radio, and so on. For a lot of content, people don't care if they get a physical "thing" and sometimes they just want to hear certain songs temporarily.

This argument if just pure FUD. If you want access to cable TV programming, the internet, or if you want any sort of phone, you HAVE to subscribe to a service. There isn't an option to "buy" it. The only choice is which provider to subscribe to (and sometimes, not even then, since Comcast has a virtual monopoly on cable and high-speed internet access in some areas). So of course subscription plans are proven money makers.

But that argument goes right out the window, because wIth online music services, you DO have a choice. Which choice you make depends on you listening habits. I, for example, am not hugely into music like some people I know are. I don't buy much for my own use. iTMS is perfect for me, since I never spend more than a few dollars a month there. But I know some people who have spent (and continue to spend) hundreds, even thousands of dollars on CDs, and don't listen to them for very long. For them, Napster would make more sense, since for a single monthly charge, they can get all the latest stuff, and just delete it when they're through.

    4. Tastes change. You may love that Oingo Boingo collection now, but it might also be embarrassing a few years later. I used to watch and love "Happy Days" on TV when I was a kid, for example, but now I find it painfully unfunny and unwatchable. There's a reason used CD sales are big business. You can't sell the iTunes songs you no longer want.

Tastes do change. I agree that you might want to forget that you ever listened to a particular group (like my own on-again off-again relationship with Weird Al's music). But sometimes, after not listening to something for a while, you might hear it on the radio or at the store and decide you like it again. The argument really goes both ways. With in iTMS download (or a CD, or a tape, or even a vinyl record), you'd still have it and can just fire it up again. With Napster, you can re-download it at no additional charge. So changing tastes doesn't seen to be a big concern. Where Napster wins out is with those who ONLY listen to something for a short time and NEVER listen to it again. Again, it comes down to personal preferences and listening-habits.

As far as used CD sales go, sure, I agree that many result from people trading in CDs they don't want to listen to any more. But many many many more are from music pirates, I'm sure. I know for a fact that some people buy CDs, rip all the songs onto their computers, then sell the CD while illegally keeping the digitized copies. In fact, this is behavior that was perpetuated by the original Napster, which aided and abetted music pirates in a huge way. CD ripping is not in and of itself illegal, since fair-use allows you to make backup copies of music (or anything else: software, movies, etc). But if you sell the original, you are supposed to include or destroy the backups.

But once again, I don't like the tone or the implications in this comment. It's in the same vein as a comment he made on the 10th about the same topic:

Yeah, if you want to watch "Dude, Where's My Car?" over and over again, the iTunes model is there for you. But if you think you may actually change and mature over time, the Napster To Go model makes sense. It's all about choice.

Last week it was "Dude, Where's My Car?" and this week it's Oingo Boingo. What are you trying to say, Paul? Frankly, I find both comments to be VERY insulting, and it's my opinion that Mr. Thurrott meant them to be that way, at least in part. What's he's all-but saying here it that iTMS is for unsophisticated, immature music listeners and for children; mature, distinguishing listeners will choose Napster. That could not be further from the truth. As I previously explained, different people have different tastes in music and differing listening habits, both of which have nothing to do with how mature they are. I suppose you also believe that iTMS users read comic books while Napster subscribers read high-brow literature such as Ernest Hemmingway? I also suppose that while iTMS users are (allegedly) watching "Dude, Where's My Car?" and listening to Oingo Boingo the Napster elite is watching "Citizen Kane" and listening to Mozart?

Not only is the argument Mr. Thurrott poses complete and utter FUD, it's not even relevant to the discussion. It's also extremely unprofessional. Paul, it may be your own personal weblog, but blanket generalizations and other comments like this reflect very badly on you, and (as far as I'm concerned) destroy your credibility. It's also one of the main reasons that Mac advocates don't like you.

    5. It's complex and time consuming to convert CD music to a digital format. One thing Mac users in particular, and techie people in general, have a problem remembering is that the technical skills they take for granted are not available to the general public. Let's say you buy a MP3 player, be it an iPod or an iriver or whatever. How do you fill it? Are you really telling me that normal people are going to take the time to rip all their CDs to MP3 format? Seriously? They're going to fix all the ID3 tag problems that exist because of the crap database at CDDB? They're going to download album art? Fine tune their collections and make playlists? You really do believe that? It's not going to happen. So buying or subscribing to music makes a lot more sense for these people (you know, 95 percent of the music-loving but technically adverse world). Filling a 4 GB iPod mini with the songs from iTunes you want would be hugely expensive. Filling a 5 GB, 20 GB, or 60 GB player with Napster To Go--and getting all the benefits of that services, including a constantly rotating selection of over 1 million songs--would not be expensive at all. And don't give that "I added up $14.95 a month for x number of years" crap either. I pay over $100 a month to my cable company for Internet access/phone/TV and I've never sat back and thought about all the money I wasted over the years. We're paying for a service that we want and think find to be valuable. That's how the world works, even if Apple doesn't want to offer such a thing (yet). That brings me to ....

You've got to be kidding me. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor after I read this one. Yes, I (and the pro iTMS people) am saying that people are going to take the time to import music off their CDs. Why wouldn't they? They've already bought and paid for them. Are you trying to tell me that they'll simply throw away their investment in CDs and pay again to download low[er] quality WMA files, when they could import the music off their CDs at a higher bitrate for free? Surely taking the time to import the music and enter the song and artist, and album names (which is the only really relevant information in my opinion) (or correct what few errors crop up from CDDB) is no more complicated or time consuming than signing up for Napster or iTMS, browsing through their catalogs, then downloading the music onto the computers. How much skill does that take, really? It's not going to happen? Actually, I'd be willing to bet that it already has. I seriously doubt that anyone would buy an iPod or any other MP3 player unless they already had a large library of digital music to put on it. And where did come from? From the CDs they've already ripped and music they've already downloaded from one place or other.

Mr. Thurrott's argument is basically that either people are going to throw away all their CDs and restart their music collection from scratch, or that the people buying MP3 players down own ANY music at all and plan to fill them entirely with online downloads. I find both possibilities to be so unlikely as to border on impossible. I also think they're insane, stupid, and FUD. Maybe they'll take the time they allegedly saved by getting all their music online to catalog, pack up, and sell all their CDs. If this argument is in fact true, then it would seem to be saying that Napster's subscribers are technically inept and/or lazy, which is contrary to his previous argument that they are the smart, sophisticated ones. You can't have it both ways Paul.

And by the way, the library of songs on Napster To Go isn't as large as the library on the Pay-per-download Napster store. And iTunes also has over a million tracks. And of course, you don't think you are wasting money on your internet access or your cable TV; as previously discussed, you don't have a choice.

    6. Just because Apple doesn't do it, doesn't mean it's not right. Apple didn't pioneer MP3 players, jukebox applications, or online music stores, but that didn't stop them from eventually jumping on board. That means that Apple could one day have the premier music subscription service, people. And when that happens, I expect all you naysayers to hop right on the bandwagon with them again (witness all the "Mac" sites that just write incessantly about MP3-related stuff now as if they're suddenly music experts). That makes you hypocrites at the very least. People who worship Apple freak me out. Loving technology I get--I'm right there with you--but loving a company is messed up, sorry.

This is utterly and completely irrelevant. Of course Apple isn't perfect. I don't believe they are, and neither do Mac advocates as a whole. In my opinion (and theirs), Apple's products and solutions are better than the competition. But that's not important, because it has nothing to do with the subscription vs pay-per-download debate whatsoever. I actually do think that Apple should offer a subscription service. That way, they can cater to all type of listeners. As I've said, their ARE merits to the subscription model.

But again, I'm offended by the tone and (in this case) outright personal attacks levied in this argument. Are you a music expert, Paul? Don't accuse other people of being naysayers and hypocrites when that is precisely what you make a habit of doing. You yourself write incessantly about MP3-related stuff, but you are no more or less qualified to do so than the Mac sites (or anyone else). Frankly, you are the hypocrite here. Besides, you are predicting that the Mac sites will jump on board with an iTMS subscription service. But what if they don't? Unless and until they do, they aren't hypocrites.

As far as "loving" Apple...... that's really an exaggeration. I know some people do, but not everyone. You can not make blanket generalizations like this, Paul. Like I said before, it's unprofessional. In fact, the entirely of argument #6 is unprofessional, since it amounts to nothing more than personal attacks.

iTMS users aren't immature or unsophisticated. Neither are those who subscribe to Napster. It's a matter of personal preference; nothing more nothing less. Mr Thurrott's arguments are unfounded and completely unsubstantiated.

    What a freaking day
My God. Today was such a complete bust.

One of my uncles recently decided that he finally had to jump on the online bandwagon (which was a whole other bucket of pain), and decided that a the same time he should upgrade the system software on his PowerMac G3. He had gone out without consulting anyone (trouble brewing!) and gotten a boxed copy of MacOS X Panther, opened it, and only then found out that his computer didn't support it. In fact, his machine was only just outside the scope of supported machines in Panther. Of course, since he opened it, he can't return it, and so he's out about $130. Ouch.

So he asks me "What can you do to help me?" Well, I spent a whole day trying to trick the machine into accepting Panther (actually, tricking Panther into accepting his machine, but that's neither here nor there). And it didn't work. lowendmac.com swears that Panther can be installed on his machine using XPostFacto, but it didn't work. Frustration frustration frustration.

Oh yeah, and a survey taken from another LJ:
